Really. The hanging baskets are coming back to the Village.

Alicia Martinez-Higgs said in an e-mail sent on Aug. 26 that the baskets “have finally arrived” and installation should begin this week. She sent the note to the four La Jolla Business District advisers and to Egon Kafka, who has been persistent in his efforts to get the colorful baskets replaced.

She had said several weeks ago that the plastic baskets purchased to replace the wire one which use more wanter ordered as soon as the contract with BDG California was approved, she said then.

Glen Rasmussen, one of the LJBID advisers, commented in an e-mail that “hopefully delays like this will be a thing of the past when a new community organization attains a new BID contract and can again run matters affecting La Jolla businesses locally. The city wants this to be done, so do all community leaders, and anyone interested in this new entity should contact the La Jolla Town Council office.

The city set up the La Jolla Business Improvement District as an interim solution after Promote La Jolla, which previously held the contract with the city to operate the district, lost the contract. That occurred after a city audit reported the PLJ board had misused funds and double-billed the city for expense.

Business improvement districts are supported by merchant fees and designed to promote marketing and beautification efforts. The city contracts with local entities to run the organizations and reimburses the groups for expenses.
