SDG&E to purchase solar energy from proposed facility

San Diego Gas & Electric signed an agreement to purchase up to 45 megawatts of solar energy from a proposed facility in the Imperial Valley, the utility announced Friday.
The 20-year purchase agreement with LS Power was submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission for approval.
In May, SDG&E agreed to purchase an additional 130 megawatts of solar energy from the proposed Centinela Solar Energy facility, for a total of 175 megawatts, enough electricity to power about 60,000 homes, according to the utility.
“This contract reaffirms SDG&E’s ongoing commitment to securing renewable resources for our customers in the San Diego region,” said Matt Burkhart, vice president of electric and fuel procurement for SDG&E. “This will also help bring us a step closer to our goal of bringing in 33 percent of renewable energy by 2020.”
The Centinela Solar Energy facility is scheduled for completion in 2014.
Power generated there will be sent to SDG&E’s service territory through the 120-mile-long Sunrise Powerlink transmission line, which is scheduled to be completed in 2012.
