La Jolla kindergarteners, families gathering on Sunday

Five-year-olds who are going to be entering kindergarten at La Jolla Elementary School on Sept. 7 will be at the school again on Sunday helping their parents prepare the playground for the first day of school.

In recent weeks, parents have brought gardening tools and gloves and filled trash bags full of weeds. A group of about eight families turned out Aug. 22 and spent 90 minutes weeding, watering and trimming plants. They are part of a playgroup that has nearly 40 families on its roster. The group, organized by parents but sanctioned by school officials, has been meeting regularly all summer.

This Sunday, the group will put some new plants in the ground and on Sept. 2, all kindergarten families are invited to a barbecue on the kindgarten playground from 5 to 7 p.m.

There’s also a fundraiser planned for all friends of La Jolla Elementary from 5 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, 702 Pearl St. For those presenting the event flier (see below), Sammy’s will contribute 20 percent of the proceeds from the meal. In addition they’ll get free gift bag from Sammy’s.
