La Jollans rally for teens hurt in crash as Cass Street Cafe reopens

La Jollans put out a call to support those injured in a Sunday night accident and to head back to Cass Street Cafe at 5550 La Jolla Blvd. which reopened Tuesday morning, less than two days after a car crashed through the restaurant’s front window, injuring five people.

The three teen crash victims – Alani Aguerre, Miles Polger and Ian Brininstool – remain in the hospital, where they are being treated for multiple broken bones and other injuries. Two other people, Sherry and Jeff Macelli, were recovering at home from cuts and bruises, sustained when the car plowed into the restaurant after striking the teens on the sidewalk.

An e-mail from the Bird Rock Community Council encouraged residents to stop by and support them “as they bring their business back on line. ”

Another e-mail from an ad hoc group identified as Bird Rock Against Drunk Drivers (B-RADD) asked supporters to gather on Saturday at the cafe to eat and sign three poster-sized cards for each of the injured teens. Anyone interested in bring in additional cards and gifts for the victims is encouraged to do so, the e-mail said.

Meanwhile, early Tuesday as tables were set awaiting diners, workers were installing new windowpanes. Owners Michelle and Mike Campagna had no comment, according to a restaurant employee.

The driver of the vehicle, 66-year-old Ronald Troyer. was charged with three counts of suspicion of felony drunk driving. He was driving on a suspended license and has a history of substance abuse.
