CPUC: SDG&E overcharged customers, owes refunds

San Diego Gas & Electric customers are getting a total of $120 million in refunds because the utility overcharged them.
The California Public Utilities Commission Thursday approved the refund, which will be made to customers in the form of a one-time bill credit beginning Sept. 1, according to the CPUC.
Most credits will range from $15 to $25, with some customers receiving more than $100, depending on their energy use.
“We are acting as quickly as possible to get this refund into the hands of consumers, many of whom are struggling in the current economy,” said CPUC Commissioner Nancy Ryan.
According to the CPUC, the over collection, through SDG&E’s Energy Resource Recovery Account, was the result of lower than expected fuel cost expenses and higher than anticipated refunds from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
