More than 125 people entered the 2010 Tour of Bouys on Sunday at La Jolla Shores.
Although it was originally reported that Elizabeth Schlicher of San Diego, who was the first to cross the line had finished with the fastest time ever in the La Jolla Cove Swim Club sponsored 5-Mile Around the Bouys ocean swim in front of the La Jolla Shores Hotel. However, Karen Scmidt was the top woman in the race last year in a faster time, 1:44:02.
Schmidt, 42, finished second in 2009, 15 seconds behind winner Todd Robinson. This year, she was the first woman to finish the 1.5-mile race.
The club’s website inadvertently announced that Eric Tanner had won the race, however Race Director Paula Selby said Monday that he had dropped out but crossed the line anyway, triggering the timers’ clock to list him as the winner.
Swimmers chose either the 5-mile course or a 1.5-mile race, with that one having both regulation and non-regulation swimmers. the latter group was allowed to use fins and wetsuits. Every swimmer was required to have a paddler for support.
