New Play Festival on its way to UCSD in April

The Baldwin New Play Festival returns to UCSD from April 15 to 25. The Theatre and Dance Department is producing full-length and one-act plays written by students in the UCSD MFA Playwriting Program.

La Jolla Playhouse associate producer, Shirley Fishman, and the Playhouse’s literary manager, Adam Greenfield, act as dramaturges to the productions.

Here’s the schedule:

“Picked” by Stephanie Timm
The youngest of three sisters is picked to marry a man she’s never met who lives across the sea.
- Directed by Lori Petermann
- 8 p.m. April 15, 18, 21, 22 and 23

“Refraction” by Ronald McCants
A Latino teen convicted of murder is hiding something about the murder he committed.
- Directed by Jeffrey Wienckowski
- 8 p.m. April 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24

“Obscura” by Jennifer Barclay
In an apartment building feverish with yearning, neighbors eavesdrop on neighbors, the government sends menacing letters and the past won’t stop knocking.

“Clementine and the Cyber Ducks” by Krista Knight
A dark comedic riff on the classic folk song set during the 1849 Gold Rush and the 1990s dot-com bubble.

- 2 p.m. April 25

One Staged Reading
By the winner of the third annual Dr. Floyd Gaffney National Playwriting. Competition on the African-American Experience (TBA).
