Google Maps launches new interactive public transit map for San Diego

Google Maps recently launched a new application where local San Diego residents can view alternate public transportation routes when using Google Maps for directions.

When traditionally looking for directions, users of Google Maps would type in a start and end address for driving directions. Now, users can select “Public Transit” instead of “Driving” directions. The new tool even tells the user the public transportation cost versus the average cost of gas used.

“We’ve worked with Google hand-in-hand to get our system up on their service,” Rob Schupp, director of marketing and communications with the Metropolitan Transit System, said. “It started about 18 months ago. …we just got the mobile service last week.”

With current gas prices averaging over $4.20 in San Diego County, public transportation may appeal to some commuters.

“If gas prices are getting you and you want to try public transportation, our Web site and Google give you good transportation planning features,” Schupp said.

Here is an example of using Google Maps Public Transportation Directions from The Light’s offices, 565 Pearl St., La Jolla, CA, to the Convention Center, 111 W Harbor Dr., San Diego, CA.
