Girl Scouts celebrate 90th anniversary
The Girl Scouts celebrated its 90th anniversary with another Urban Campout at its headquarters in Balboa Park recently. The theme of this year’s bash was “Drive In … Rock Out” – a ’50s-style retro party that encouraged supporters to “grease back their hair, pull up their pony tails, and party under the stars.”
Pedal pushers, poodle skirts, Fonzy-style leather jackets and other familiar images of the era were the outfits of choice for the guests, as they rocked to the music of The Heroes. The Scouts earned even more money from silent and live auctions and the sale of opportunity drawings. Supporters enjoyed a gourmet version of comfort food rooted in ’50s cuisine (prepared by Giuseppe Caterers of La Jolla). Harley rides, hot-rods and hula hoop contests were all part of the evening’s fun.
La Jolla’s Susan McClellan chaired the committee, and made a grand entrance on a motorcycle. Phil and Catherine Blair and Mel and Linda Katz were honorary chairs. Among the many local party-goers in attendance were Nigella Hilgarth (director of the Birch Aquarium), Kathryn Murphy, Jeanne Jones, Sally Thornton, Vicky Holly, Veryl Mortenson, Reena Horowitz, Laura McDonald and Karen Raker.
