Village health club adds spa services to its mix
A La Jolla health club has morphed into a spa.
Since Sept. 1, The Spa at La Jolla Sports Club has been open providing spa services to members, non-members and local hotel guests.
“We’ll have two massage rooms, and we’ll be full-service with trained massage therapists throwing esthetics into the mix,” said Rachel Stacy, spa director for both The Sports Club and its sister club, The Sporting Club at the Aventine. “It’s just a whole mind, body, spirit thing, in every aspect.”
Stacy added that, in addition to better service and convenience for both health clubs’ members, another motivator for the Spa launch was to make services available for local hotel guests. “There are many hotels within walking distance of The Club and we are excited about the quality Spa experience we can make available to them,” Stacy said, adding she’s enjoying the process of helping create The Spa at La Jolla Sports Club from the ground up. “This is something I have always wanted to do.”
Claire Bullas, the Sports Club’s general manager, said when non-members and hotel guests purchase a spa treatment, they will receive a complimentary day pass to the Club. “It’s a great value and a great way for people to enjoy an entire a day of health and fitness,” she noted. “They could take a yoga class, do a cardio session and get a spa treatment all at one place.”
Bullas added spa services will be offered at a discounted price to club members.
The Spa staff from The Sporting Club at the Aventine also will be staffing The Spa at La Jolla Sports Club. “They are experts in their field, and we are very excited to have them here,” added Bullas.
The La Jolla Sports Club is a high-end, boutique fitness club in the Merrill Lynch Courtyard Building in the heart of La Jolla Village. The recently remodeled Club offers top-of-the-line equipment, a wide variety of group exercise classes and specialty programming, spa services and a private training Pilates studio. Child-care services are available on-site.
The menu at the new La Jolla Village spa includes a variety of massage therapies, body treatments, facials and other skin-care treatments.
European, deep tissue and sports massages are some of those being offered for men and others with special needs. There’s even a massage therapy for expectant moms.
Also on La Jolla Sports Club’s spa menu are a host of body wraps, as well as body waxing, aromatherapy and skin peels.
Stacy said two spa rooms at La Jolla Sports Club will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. On those days, trained estheticians will give a wide variety of facials. The spa’s menu also features exotic treatments, like the 25-minute Island Castaway, which begins with a papaya pineapple skin exfoliating body scrub, followed by the slow pouring of warm coconut milk which is gently rubbed into the client’s body.
Other alluring spa treatments include the herbal treatment wrap using a botanical mask, and the Pacific Scalp Escape, a pampering scalp massage and acupressure point treatment employing oils of Kuikui and coconut to relieve tension.
Stacy, who came to San Diego from Los Angeles in 2003, was swept up by the spa industry from the get-go. “This is my passion,” she said. “I was teaching, and I got a job at La Costa spa part-time three days a week as a receptionist. Six months later, I told my boss, ‘This is what I want to do, teach me everything you know.’ ”
Seven months after that, Stacy was hired as the spa director with The Spa at The Sporting Club. Since then, she’s felt it was essential that spa services like those at the Sporting Club be offered at the Sports Club as well. “A year and a half later we are opening it up, so it’s really exciting to me,” said Stacy, who added her ultimate goal down the road is to open her own spa. “It’s nice to have this small little baby I can mend and grow and work with for the owners: I adore them,” she said.
La Jolla Sports Club will kick off its spa launch with a grand opening Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the club at 7825 Fay Ave. Massage therapists will give complimentary chair massages and estheticians will provide complimentary skin analysis and mini-facials. Skin product specialists from Epicuren and MD Skincare also will be available at the event to disperse information and do product giveaways. Brick and Bell Restaurant will provide refreshments. Event special guests will be San Diego Charger Girls, for whom The La Jolla Sports Club is an official Health Club Provider.
