Young adult service shakes up Beth El
Congregation Beth El will hold a special Young Adult Service for adults age 36 and under. The services will be held on Friday nights, April 8 and May 6 at 8 p.m.
Come join Jessie Blank and Rabbi Avi Libman for singing, prayers, discussion with a speaker and refreshments. The May 6 services will be followed by a potluck dinner.
Rabbi Libman said the service hopes to encourage graduates and other young people to the congregation to network, learn, worship and enjoy each other’s company.
“It’s an opportunity to connect as young adults,” said Libman. “Part of it is networking, business-wise, but also socially.”
Libman said part of the aim of the service is to give young adults something to focus on other than the financial woes they may be carrying.
“For most of that age group, it’s not inexpensive to be a member of this community, stuff costs money,” said Libman. “Most of the people that come are probably in their mid-to-late 20s, early 30s, some of them just got out of school, maybe they’re still in school, and they’re financially struggling. This is our way of reaching out to them and telling them that money is not everything.”
The program is an hour-long service and will include a guest speaker. The rabbis have tried to find interesting, unique and insightful speakers that are not just everyday members of the community. Previous speakers have included the managing editor of the San Diego Jewish Journal.
“We try and bring speakers that are within the age group, so that people can identify …” said Libman. “We’re really trying to stir up some emotion, doing something interesting, something fresh that they wouldn’t have every day.”
Music will be provided at the service by Rabbi Philip Graubart, who will mix traditional and more modern and lively songs.
The services are open to the public at no cost.
Congregation Beth El is a conservative synagogue at 8660 Gilman Drive in La Jolla.
